In collaboration with the City of Linz, the Kaiserschild Foundation is bringing street art to the pavement in front of the New Town Hall: the street art duo Jana&JS are reinterpreting a still life by the Dutch master Pieter Claesz. From the start of June, the area – measuring around 250 m² – will be transformed into a walk-in work of art that visitors can explore until autumn.
The focus is on the work ‘Still Life with a Glass Goblet’ (1642) from the Foundation’s art collection. Jana&JS are bringing this almost 400-year-old motif into the present day – in an interactive, accessible way, right under visitors’ feet.
The project is part of Kaiserschild Art Defined, which brings the Old Masters to life in new ways. Alongside street art, the Foundation is focusing on digital outreach: On 12 june , high-resolution digitised versions of Claesz’s paintings will be on display at Ars Electronica Deep Space, one of the world’s most spectacular digital experience spaces. These High Resolution Multiperspective Images allow visitors to immerse themselves deeply in the pictorial worlds and explore the finest details.
At the heart of the project is a travelling exhibition in which paintings by Pieter Claesz are displayed alongside digital reproductions of these works, which visitors can explore interactively.
The exhibition ‘Pieter Claesz: Still Life’ opens on 17 June at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It will subsequently be on display at the Alte Galerie of the Universalmuseum Joanneum and at the Kunst Museum Winterthur.
